  • Small African Melon-Thistle
Beschreibung im Werk (engl.)

This Melon-Thistle is brought to us from the Cape of Good-Hope, and is hardy enough to stand the Winter in a common Green-House. I have yet seen any of them exceed six Inches in height, tho' there are some of them at Amsterdam, that have been there many years.

The Body of it, which is about three Inches Diameter, is of the Substance of the Flesh of an Apple, which is cover'd all over with green Knots pointed with Stars of a reddish brown Colour, from between which come forth the Flowers, and afterwards the Fruit breaks out at once perfectly ripe, and of a deep red Colour: These include little black Seeds, which being sown in a hot Bed, will bring forth young Plants, or if we cut off the Top of the Plant, the remaining part will put forth young Heads, which may be separated from it in the Summer, and planted for Increase.
